Energy projects and designs recognized

Three projects demonstrating innovative and sustainable design applications for Canadians have been honoured with 2014 Scotiabank EcoLiving Awards. Businesses, entrepreneurs, and students were eligible to enter the annual contest, with winners chosen by a panel of industry experts. Entries should demonstrate to Canadians the value of using energy efficiently.

May building stays stable

Canada’s housing starts for the month of May remain stable, reports Canada Mortgage and Housing Corporation (CMHC). Regionally, Atlantic Canada, Québec, and British Columbia saw slight increases, Ontario remained steady, and the Prairies saw a decline. Overall, the seasonally adjusted annual rate (SAAR) was 198,324 in May, which is slightly up from 196,687 in April.

Sustainable alliance formed

Canadian Standards Association (CSA) and Canada Green Building Council (CaGBC) have announced a partnership to support initiatives related to sustainable design and environmentally responsible building materials. The two industry groups are joining up in support of CaGBC’s Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) v4 and CSA’s Environmental Product Declaration (EPD) program.

World roofing demand on the rise

The demand for roofing is predicted to increase 3.7 per cent annually until the year 2018—a notable upturn over the past several years’ demand. Market-research firm Freedonia Group has published the study, World Roofing, which attributes part of the recent growth in demand to a rebound in residential building construction in developed countries.
