06 05 73 Wood Treatment
The Impel® Boron Rods are concentrated, water diffusible borate glass rods. The placement of the rods into the heartwood of logs or pillar posts offers superior internal protection against fungal decay and insect attack. With as little as 25 per cent moisture content in the wood, a long-term supply of wood preservative is drawn into the wood fibres, preventing and eradicating fungus, bacterial, and insect attacks. The boron diffuses into the wood (both heartwood and sapwood) over a few months. Studies have shown re-treatment is required every five to eight years. However, historical field experience from utilities has shown that most hydro companies will re-inspect and re-treat (if necessary) at intervals of eight to 10 years.
The rods come in three sizes - 8 x 65 mm (315 x 2559 mils) (7 grams), 12 x 100 mm (473 x 3937 mils) (24 grams), and 18 x 75 mm (709 x 2953 mils) (40 grams). Each gram covers up to 250 cubic cm of wood. The smallest rods are for small structures such as window frames. The middle ones are used in vertical pillar posts and utility poles. The largest rods are for log home owners or builders.
