Toronto bank internationally recognized

Emporis, the international building data provider, has included Toronto’s Scotia Plaza on its list of the world’s most sustainable, functional, and impressive bank buildings. The 275-m (902-ft) high, 68-storey building houses Scotia Bank’s headquarters, as well as the bank’s historic main building, which was designated under the Ontario Heritage Act in 1975.

Ontario bridge infrastructure report released

A Southwestern Ontario study on maintaining the province’s bridge infrastructure has determined Alternative Financing and Procurement (AFP) methods can be used to keep these structures in good repair. A total of 635 structures in Wellington County were evaluated in the study commissioned by Ontario Good Roads Association (OGRA) and Residential & Civil Construction Alliance of Ontario (RCCAO).

A focus of the day-long event was for the primary building industries—steel, wood, and concrete—to share information and work toward a common science-based approach to building materials.

National brownfield projects honoured with Brownie awards

The Canadian Urban Institute (CUI) has announced the winners of its 13^th annual Brownie Awards program, honouring innovation and sustainability in the country’s brownfield redevelopment. The award for Best Large-scale Project was presented to the Canmet Material Technology Laboratory in Hamilton. The project, designed by Diamond Schmitt Architects, is on a 15-ha (37-acre) site with a century of industrial history.

Non-residential building grows nationally

After reported declines, the third quarter of 2013 saw an overall increase in non-residential building investment, thanks to growth in six provinces. The increase in investments was up a total of 4.4 per cent to $13 billion, following a 2.7 per cent reported decline in the second quarter.

SMACNA recognizes Toronto Chapter leader

Sheet Metal and Air-conditioning Contractors’ National Association (SMACNA) awarded Toronto Chapter leader Wayne Peterson with the Petersen-Dunn Award. The honour is distributed to the organization’s executive of the year, and was presented at this year’s 70th annual convention held in Maui, Hawaii last week. It is given to the member demonstrating a substantive contribution to his or her local chapter, as well as the overall SMACNA.
