A new scholarship aims to address the underrepresentation of women in skilled trades. The “Building Her Up” scholarship plans to reduce financial barriers, provide mentorship, and increase visibility for women pursuing careers in construction.

The scholarship was launched by Fengate Asset Management in partnership with Building Up, a Toronto‑based nonprofit social enterprise. Building Up is dedicated to expanding access to sustainable careers in the construction trades for individuals who face barriers to employment.

The “Building Her Up” scholarship covers full tuition for a participant in the Building Up program and pairs the recipient with a Fengate mentor.

Akeba Canning is the scholarship’s inaugural recipient. She described the scholarship as a turning point that will push her to build a stronger future in the trades. Through the Build Up program, she hopes to “learn strong skills, gain more hands-on experience, and become confident in a trade”.

Fengate officials say the scholarship supports the firm’s long-standing commitment to responsible labour practices, strong workforce development, and inclusive employment.
