Activity Summary

Sustainable Mechanical Design will cover decarbonization trends in the industry, focusing on information that architects should be aware of with respect to mechanical system design. Topics include mechanical system types, impact of building envelope, space requirements for mechanical systems, and design for climate resiliency. Dave will discuss the practical considerations of different design decisions, as well as recent and upcoming changes to relevant codes and standards.

Objectives

By the end of this learning activity, participants will be able to:

1. Identify and explain key decarbonization trends influencing mechanical system design and evaluate their implications for architects and building design professionals.
2. Assess the relationship between building envelope performance, mechanical system selection, space requirements, and overall building energy efficiency when make design decisions.
3. Apply knowledgeof climate resiliency principles, emerging codes, and evolving industry standards to supporting informed, sustainable mechanical design strategies in future projects.

Presenter: Dave Abuza, P.Eng, P.E, LEED AP BD+C

As a Technical Leader for HHA’s Vancouver Healthcare division, Dave is responsible for providing direction on complex projects to ensure quality standards and best practices are met at every step.  With 15 years of experience in the industry, Dave is well-versed in best practices for sustainability, including LEED certification, Zero Net Energy, and decarbonization.
