Timber takes root in B.C.: A model for sustainable growth

Nexus, a six-storey post-and-beam mass timber project, is the first phase in a seven-phase, 12-building master plan community designed to bring 1,500 new homes, retail, and offices to Penticton’s Innovation District.
If realized, this project would serve as proof of concept for sustainable, mixed-use mass timber buildings that can be cost-effective, locally built, and replicable across B.C.
At street level, Nexus houses a daycare and retail space. Above, four storeys of Class A offices provide space tailored to medical and professional tenants.
The design is simple, smart, and intentional, featuring:
- A rectilinear, post-and-beam structure with glue-laminated timber (glulam) columns and
beams and cross-laminated timber (CLT) floor and roof panels
- Value-engineered detailing to reduce costs and speed up construction
- A potential CLT elevator core, now under study for its structural feasibility
The team is sourcing timber and trades from the Okanagan, supporting regional jobs and industries while celebrating the area’s long-standing connection to wood construction.
