An Inuit-owned construction firm has won a $35.6-million federal contract to build a 23-unit residential complex in Iqaluit.

Arctic Fresh Projects Inc. will construct the multi-residential building on federal government property. The site previously held three single-family housing units, which were demolished in the fall of 2024.

The project is expected to create up to 55 jobs over the next two years. Construction is scheduled for completion by December 2028.

The building will include a mix of two- and three-bedroom units, two of which will be accessible.

The federal government awarded the contract under its new Buy Canadian Policy. Arctic Fresh Projects will predominantly use Canadian-made steel, aluminum, and lumber, according to Public Services and Procurement Canada.

The contract also includes an Inuit Benefits Plan. The plan is intended to strengthen Inuit business capacity and increase economic opportunities in Nunavut.

The completed units will house federal government employees who work and live in Iqaluit.

The contract marks one of the first federal procurements completed under the Buy Canadian Policy. The policy prioritizes Canadian suppliers and Canadian content in strategic federal procurement.
