Lobby renewal anchors office tower upgrade

A two-year renovation and rebranding program for Berczy Square in downtown Toronto has been completed.
The project at 33 Yonge St. centres on a major transformation of the building’s atrium lobby and forms part of a broader effort by property manager GWL Realty Advisors to reposition the office property for changing workplace expectations.
Originally constructed in 1982 and designed by WZMH Architects, the 13-storey office building occupies a two-acre site between Front and Wellington streets. The renovation introduces new tenant amenities, including a fitness facility, commuter showers and lockers, five outdoor patios, retail space, and food-service offerings.
Toronto-based DIALOG led the lobby redesign. The project preserves key architectural features of the original building while adapting the space for contemporary use. New elements include seating areas, planted features, a reflecting pool, a trellis surrounding the elevator core, and upgraded circulation areas. According to the project team, all materials used in the renovation were sourced in Canada.

The design aims to turn the lobby into a gathering space rather than a pass-through area. Different zones support meetings, informal work, and events, while strengthening connections between Yonge Street and nearby Berczy Park.
A 27.4 m (90 ft) digital display was also added within the atrium, integrated into the architectural design and programmed with generative artwork that responds to changing conditions such as time, weather, and seasons.
