AESS 4 can be characterized by the lower-level steel used in Brookfi eld Place in Toronto. This Calatrava-designed project, from the mid-1990s, is a good example of the very high expectations for most AESS prior to the establishment of the Canadian Institute of Steel Construction (CISC) category system. Even on this building, less-expensive detailing was used on the high-level ‘canoes’ as a method of saving on fabrication costs and in recognition of the distance to view. All the elements are fabricated from custom sections, resulting in high costs.
