Last month, Toronto’s Ryerson University[2] in partnership with the city-based Moses Structural Engineers[3], announced the winners of TimberFever—an annual competition where students are asked to build a life-size structure out of wood.

Sixteen teams from six universities across Ontario—including Ryerson, Carleton[4], Laurentian[5], Queen’s[6], Waterloo[7], and University of Toronto[8]—participated in this cross-disciplinary 36-hour design-build competition.

Students were tasked with building a community-based ‘reading room.’ Over the course of the four-day competition, they demonstrated teamwork, communication, time-management, and woodworking skills.

Winners were chosen by a panel of industry experts. Team Cherry Birch won the first place. Team Ginkgo won the second place as well as the People’s Choice Award, which was chosen by the public—it garnered more than 1000 online votes. Team Sumac won the third place.

The winning team comprised:

TimberFever included both architectural science and civil engineering students. They were mentored by practising architects, engineers, and representatives from the Carpenters’ District Council of Ontario[9]. The winning designs will be featured in multiple exhibits across Ontario in the coming months. Visit their website[10] for updates.
