Architecture firm Lemaymichaud has won three prizes at the 13th edition of the Grands Prix Du Design 2020.
Strøm Nordic Spa, Qué., won the ‘Project of the Year’ and the ‘Wellness, Training, and Recreation Centre’ awards. They firm also received the ‘Accommodation Establishment’ award for their Residence Inn Calgary by Marriott project.
The rich maritime history of the St. Lawrence River and the spectacular views the site offers served as a framework for the spa’s design. The layout of the installations, inspired by the imprint of the old quays once present on the banks, creates alternating volumes of full and empty, deposited on the profile of the land and divided into layers descending toward the river. This fragmentation allows the proposal of different thermal zones, developed to offer sensory universes, linked together to form a unique and complete experience.
The jury was impressed with the beauty of the whole project, supported by an exceptional use of materials.
The Marriott Residence Inn in Calgary, the chain’s largest hotel in North America, is spread over 35 floors of a tower built above the Alberta Boot Company, the former cowboy boot factory. The design of the establishment refers to the factory by incorporating stitching patterns into the works decorating the rooms, and by using old advertisements in the composition of the lobby mural.
Additionally, Maude Hébert, a young graduate in interior design and member of the Lemaymichaud team for two years, won the Ferdie Student Prize, which recognizes the excellence of design student projects in Québec.
