Century-old academic landmark transforms into inclusive gateway

The University of Alberta has officially unveiled University Commons, a 37,626-m2 (405,000-sf) transformation of the former century-old dentistry and pharmacy facility.
Designed by Zeidler Architecture, the transformative fit-out is fully reimagined to promote a renewed sense of openness, accessibility, and inclusivity.

Essential services, including the registrar, dean of students, and senior administration, are centralized alongside academic departments, open study areas, bookable meeting rooms, and collaborative project spaces.
The new interiors use custom material palettes, acoustic treatments, and designer furniture that promote warmth, supporting an environment that is both welcoming and adaptable for long-term use.
Building information modelling (BIM) co-ordinated the complex fit-out, clarifying spatial relationships, aligning new systems, and enabling efficient collaboration across disciplines.
