Urban One Builders is a leading edge construction company that specializes in commercial, industrial and residential projects in British Columbia and Alberta.  We have worked on numerous landmark projects, comprised mainly of large multi-tower, multi-phrase mixed-use, multi-family residential and institutional projects.  We are currently seeking a qualified and experienced Superintendent to join our team.  This is a full-time, permanent position based out of our Vancouver office.

Duties & Responsibilities

The Superintendent will be responsible for managing and coordinating project budgets, schedule, quality and human resources requirements.  The position supervises the field construction of a project and assists in the organizing, planning and scheduling of the work, while staying within budget and to the quality specified.

Specific duties and responsibilities include – but are not limited to – complying with and effectively implementing Urban One's Safety Program to ensure safety and environmental standards are met or exceeded; ensuring project construction is completed in compliance with the construction schedule, control budget, and contract documents, as well as Urban One's Quality Management Program; executing work in accordance with contract documents, sub-contracts/agreements, plans, specifications and shop drawings, including coordination and execution of changes to the work; and responsibility for temporary worker hiring decisions in conjunction with the Project Manager, and directly managing and promoting productivity of employees on the job site, including trade contractors, suppliers, assistants and hourly employees, required to construct the project in accordance with the contracts, plans and specifications.  The incumbent will also prepare weekly production schedules; in conjunction with the Project Manager, ensure appropriate action is taken in instances where contracts, plans and specifications are inadequate or contravene good building practice; review and enforce trade contracts, scopes of work for discrepancies with project requirements; review drawings for dimensional errors, construction detailing, constructability, economy and long-term durability in conjunction with the Project Manager; review the budget and underlying estimates to understand assumptions made and conditions set in conjunction with the Project Manager; coordinate inspections with civic and other authorities with jurisdiction for routine and occupancy-related inspections; and attend, chair and document regularly scheduled trade meetings.

This position requires the supervision of the field construction staff on a project and any incumbents in a junior Superintendent role.


The successful candidate will have a post-secondary degree or diploma in Engineering, Architecture, Building Technology or Construction Management.  Must have at least 10 years of field supervision experience or a combination of relevant education and experience.  The incumbent will have 10+ years of demonstrable concrete experience.   Gold Seal certification is an asset, as is a Red Seal Carpenter (Journeyman) Certificate.  Must have strong English (reading, writing, speaking) communication skills.   

Salary & Benefits

The position pays $100,000 per annum, based on a 40 hour work week and possessing the required education and experience.  Benefits include 3 weeks' vacation per year, medical, extended health, dental and insurance coverage, $500 health spending account, as well as participation in a discretionary year-end bonus program.
