Title of the Position: Specialized Painter and Maintenance Technician

Job Duties:

Preparing painting surface and area:

  • Adequately preparing a job site for painting, including protecting all services, skillfully moving all equipment and furniture, using plastic and drop sheets to protect the floor, and erecting scaffolding;
  • Skillfully removing wallpaper to ensure no damage to the underlying drywall;
  • Removing paint in historical buildings without damaging the surrounding area;
  • Removing harmful materials, including lead, from painting surfaces in accordance with established safety standards;
  • Ensuring surfaces are not susceptible to moisture by sealing cracks and corners where building materials meet;
  • Applying firestopping materials as necessary;
  • Preparing mechanical rooms for epoxy coating including grinding or shot blasting floors, cleaning floors, restoring cracks, vacuuming, and degreasing the floors in cases where oil has penetrated the concrete;
  • Preparing other surfaces within mechanical rooms for painting, including cleaning pipes and tanks, general cleaning and applying primer;
  • Water blasting and power washing concrete surfaces to remove paint from concrete structures;
  • Preparing surfaces for spray-painting;
  • Using associated protective equipment including masks, gloves, and respirators as necessary;
  • Disinfecting the location as necessary;
  • Repairing frames, insulation, drywall and vapour barriers; and
  • Working with environmental technicians to apply water damage remediation practices including analyzing moisture levels, assessing the scope of damage, cutting drywall to appropriate requirements, installing fans and dehumidifiers.


Preparing painting materials:

  • Selecting primer based on the location and type of surface being finished;
  • Mixing and thinning paint and colour to achieve desired decorative results;
  • Selecting painting tools to achieve desired decorative results; and
  • Following designer or architect specifications with respect to determining the quantity of materials and the appropriate materials for application to a wide variety of surfaces including walls, floors, ceilings, elevators, service doors, office doors, and boardroom doors.

 

Painting surfaces:

  • Applying epoxy coating to mechanical room floors;
  • Applying primer and paint at the appropriate spread rate and temperature in order to ensure the best results;
  • Applying paint using rollers and brushes in commercial and residential buildings;
  • Applying paint using specialized painting techniques and speciality finishes according to drawings, requirements of the material and client requests; and
  • Using spray paint equipment as necessary.

 

Other duties:

  • Cleaning paint spills, dust from sanding and other materials on job site;
  • Implementing job site safety practices;
  • Providing consultations and cost estimates to clients as required;
  • Restoring damaged decorative painting to original state;
  • Working with environmental technicians to assess mold and humidity levels to determine whether restoration work can proceed; and
  • Installing wall coverings, replacing wall coverings and repairing damaged wall coverings.


Skills Requirements:

  • Completion of secondary school;
  • At least one (1) year of experience as a specialized painter/decorator (residential and/or commercial);
    • Experience painting downtown AAA office buildings, lobbies, main, common and maintenance corridors, boardrooms, offices, lunchrooms, and mechanical rooms considered an asset;  
  • Experience with coating application, including implementing novelty and decorative effects, multi-colour finishes, and metallicized coating in adherence with safety procedure and in accordance with client requests;
  • Experience implementing lead-based removal and encapsulation practices;
  • Experience using spray paint equipment;
  • Ability to work outdoors at heights;
  • Ability to work in confined spaces;
  • Willing to attend at customer sites within 100km of the Toronto, ON area.


Terms of Employment: Permanent, Full-time

Language of Work: English

Wage: $25.00-$31.00/hour (to be negotiated); 35 to 40 hours / week

Location of Work: Based out of 14 Princess of Wales Ct Toronto ON M9B 6H5 (will be required to attend at various client/company sites within 100km of the Toronto, ON area)
