| An industry inquiry: Raising expectations |

The combination of increased building demands and retiring baby boomers has created a flood of employment opportunities for new construction workers. The pacesetters of this building frenzy are B.C. and Alberta, according to the fourth annual national labour market forecast by the Construction Sector Council (CSC). Another 14,358 and 31,035 new workers will be required in B.C. and Alberta, respectively, within the next eight years just to maintain the present building activity of the two flourishing provinces. The mounting number of major projects, currently about $168 billion, being constructed in these provinces is a sign of a promising future in the construction industry. On a national scale, 297,921 workers will be needed to meet approaching construction demands. Last year alone, 42,243 Canadians were hired within the construction industry.
