| Burj Dubai world's tallest man-made structure... and growing |
![]() Photo courtesy EPA/Corbis Standing tall at 629 m (2064 ft), the Burj Dubai tower in the United Arab Emirates still has a little way to go before it reaches completion. Already rising higher than the planet's tallest building for quite some time, the still-under-construction Burj Dubai tower has been named the tallest structure still standing. In mid-April, the United Arab Emirates structure reached 629 m (2064 ft), surpassing the height of the KVLY-TV Mast (Blanchard, North Dakota). The CN Tower's 30-year reign as the world's tallest freestanding structure ended last September, when its 553-m (1815-ft) stature was bested by the Dubai tower. While Burj Dubai is taller than any other building, Taiwan's Taipei 101 is still considered the record holder. This is because the Council on Tall buildings and Urban Habitat (CTBUH) has confirmed the tower will not be classified as a ‘building,' until it has been completed, clad, and at least partially open for business. Designed by Adrian Smith and Skidmore, Owings and Merrill (SOM), the project is scheduled for a September completion next year. It is expected to be 818 m (2684 ft), with 164 floors.
