Yukon infrastructure projects heat up

In late March, the Canadian and Yukon governments announced initiatives dealing with infrastructure improvements seeing almost $243 million flow into the territory.

The signing of a framework agreement under the federal government's Building Canada plan will provide $25 million annually through to 2014. The money is intended to help address projects involving water/wastewater, airports, roadways, and green energy at the territorial and community level, including First Nations. Further, an additional $60 million will reach communities due to the extension of the Gas Tax Fund Agreement from 2010 to 2014.

On a related note, the two governments also announced the City of Whitehorse will be investing in nine infrastructure projects thanks to more than $16 million from the Canada-Yukon Gas Tax Agreement. The planned initiatives include sidewalk upgrades, a water-sampling station, and the upgrade of a public safety building to meet certification under the (CaGBC's) Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) program.
