Urban design award winners announced

Waterloo Public Square (Waterloo, Ont.) won in the civic design project category in this year's National Urban Design Awards.


A children's garden, a health centre, and an expressway transformation project were among the winners of the 2010 National Urban Design Awards.

The Royal Architectural Institute of Canada (RAIC), the Canadian Institute of Planners (CIP), and the Canadian Society of Landscape Architects (CSLA) recognized eight winning projects from across Canada for maintaining and enhancing the quality of life in Canadian cities.

"The 2010 National Urban Design Awards highlight the excellent that plays a vital role and enables the design community to build lively, safe, and sustainable cities," said CSLA president Linda Irvine. "Each project shows how dramatic changes to our public life and urban spaces enhance our lives."

Other award-winners include:
• Urban Fragments—Capital Health Centre (Edmonton), Dub Architects;
• Civic Design Projects—Waterloo Public Square (Waterloo, Ont.), GSP Group; and
• Special Jury Award: Small or Medium Community Urban Design—HRMbyDesign (Halifax, N.S.), The Downtown Halifax Plan, Heritage and Design Department, Halifax Regional Municipality.

The awards will be presented at the Design Exchange in October.
