Photo courtesy Enermodal Engineering The Canada Green Building Council (CaGBC) has acquired the Smart Growth B.C. program and is working to deliver its principles across Canadian provinces. This includes green infrastructure, demonstrated in the Kitchener, Ont., Activa Sportsplex building that is Gold-certified under CaGBC's Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) New Construction (NC) program. Smart Growth B.C.'s programs and brand have been acquired by the Canada Green Building Council (CaGBC). According to Ron Lemaire, CaGBC's vice-president of marketing development, the council wants to ensure a legacy for the province. “CaGBC acquired the brand and products from Smart Growth B.C., and is going to invest in the products still available, and try to develop and deliver Smart Growth's principles across all provinces,” he told Construction Canada Online. The Smart Growth products include a range of green building and community development tools applicable at the scale of an entire city, region, neighbourhood, or smaller community, as well as the individual building.

In related news, CaGBC has partnered with the Royal Architectural Institute of Canada (RAIC) Foundation to award a 2010 scholarship to University of Waterloo student, Matthew A. Schmid. The annual scholarship has been given out to full-time students in master's degree programs throughout Canadian schools of architecture since 2006. CaGBC provides the RAIC with $5000 to raise the next generation of ‘green' designers by promoting and encouraging sustainable research and design. “The goal in the end is between the RAIC and the CaGBC to try and encourage institutions in Canada to include thinking around green design,” said Lemaire. Students have to submit a master's thesis proposal to be eligible. A jury then selects the one with the most promising environmental benefits.
