The Whistler, B.C. Olympic Athletes' Village was chosen as the permanent modular winner in the Best of Show category at this year's MBI awards.

Whistler's Olympic Athletes' Village has won 'Best of Show' in the Modular Building Institute (MBI) Awards of Distinction contest.

Britco Structures' 6511-m² (70,085-sf) project was designed to Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) Silver standards and "Whistler Green" guidelines. The project incorporates an environmental and wildlife management plan. All the village areas are heated and cooled with a hydronic system that uses an in-ground district energy system with low-temperature radiant ceiling panels for delivering heat. The water source is heated by a central plant that extracts heat from Whistler's Wastewater treatment plant and is supplemented during peak demand by boilers fired with gas extracted from a decommissioned landfill.

Other Canadian winners include:
• Permanent–Retail or Hospitality under 186 m² (2000 sf)—NRB, Red Arrow (Calgary, Alta.);
• Permanent–Education: under 465 m² (5000 sf)—NRB, Taddle Creek Montessori School Addition (Toronto);
• Temporary–Single-wide: any square footage—PTI Group, 80-m³ (2825-cf) per day modular wastewater treatment plant (Fort McMurray, Alta.); and
• Temporary–Education: under 186 m² (2000 sf)—Provincial Partitions, Dearcroft Montessori School (Oakville, Ont.).

All projects are judged in the areas of:
• architectural excellence;
• technical innovation; and
• project length and efficiency.
