Calling for tall building entries

Winnipeg's Manitoba Hydro Tower won the Best Tall Building Americas Award at last year's Council on Tall Buildings and Urban Habitat (CTBUH) annual awards program.

The Council on Tall Buildings and Urban Habitat (CTBUH) is now accepting entries for its ninth annual awards program.

To be considered for the Americas Award, projects must be completed between January 1, 2009 and October 1, 2010. (There are also an additional six Tall Building Awards—four recognizing excellence in design and construction and two Lifetime Achievement Awards.) The awards recognize projects that have made great contributions to tall building and urban environment advancement, and that achieve sustainability at the highest and broadest level. The projects must also exhibit processes and/or innovations that have added to the profession of design and enhanced cities and their residents.

Last year, the 112.5-m (369-ft) tall Manitoba Hydro Place—designed by Toronto-based Kuwabara Payne McKenna Blumberg Architects—won an award for Best Tall Building in the Americas category. It has 22 mechanical floors and a podium ranging from two to three storeys. It was designed to consume 60 per cent less energy than National Building Code of Canada (NBC) requirements.

The deadline for nominations is April 30; the dinner and awards ceremony will take place in Chicago on October 21.
