| Input sought in UniFormat update |
Photo courtesy BigStockPhoto.com For construction projects large and small, cost estimates can be formulated using information categorized by UniFormat. A new edition is currently under review. The Construction Specifications Institute (CSI) is seeking comments on a draft for the new edition of UniFormat, the classification standard it co-publishes with CSC. Often seen in performance specifications and preliminary project descriptions (PPDs), UniFormat allows data to be arranged based on physical parts (i.e. elements) of a facility. This information can then be used to present cost estimates during the schematic design phase. Since it breaks a facility into systems and assemblies (e.g. substructure, shell, interiors, and services), UniFormat allows the project to be priced at the elemental level. This lets design alternatives be better evaluated. UniFormat's approach is also critical for building information modelling (BIM) software because its organizational strategy allows objects to be placed before their properties have been further defined. With a final publication date set for May, CSI is currently looking for input on Draft Three of the standard—it can be downloaded from the institute's website. Comments may be posted in CSI's Forums or This e-mail address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it to CSI Technical Senior Manager (and CSC Honourary Member) Greg Ceton with the words, "UniFormat Draft Comments" in the subject line. Feedback will be accepted until March 11.
