| Government financing for student housing loans |
Photo courtesy BigStockPhoto.com The Government of Canada started to help finance student housing loans this past January. An increase in construction could be forthcoming. Post-secondary student housing construction should increase this year as the Canada Mortgage and Housing Corporation (CMHC) has announced mortgage loan insurance policies to help finance student residence buildings throughout the country. The federal government will help finance loans up to 85 per cent of the lending value for the construction, purchase, or refinancing for university and college student housing—both on and off campus—through CMHC's mortgage loan insurance for multi-unit student housing. The demand for student housing is expected to increase for an extended period as demographics change and the growth of international students rise. CMHC told Construction Canada Online that in many areas of the country, full-time enrolment is expected to rise over the next decade as well.
