The Building Performance Institute (BPI) has named Laverne Dalgleish the first recipient of the Tony Woods Award for Excellence in Advancing the Home Performance Industry in Canada. Dalgleish manages two national quality assurance programs for insulation and exterior cladding systems, along with a U.S. program for air barriers. He chairs two committees for Underwriters Laboratories of Canada (ULC), sits on the National Model Energy Code (NMEC) working group, and has represented Canada in developing International Organization for Standardization (ISO) standards for various insulation products. "It means a great deal to me to be to be the first Canadian to be honoured with the Tony Woods award," Dalgleish told Construction Canada Online. "Tony was one of the first individuals I met in the energy conservation industry over 30 years ago. For me, he symbolized complete dedication to energy conservation." The award's namesake was an energy efficiency expert (and frequent author for Construction Canada), who passed away earlier this year. "Tony was a very good friend, so receiving the award means two things to me," Dalgleish said. "One is recognition from the industry and the other is that I feel the award is coming from a friend." Over a career stretching back almost three decades, Dalgleish has developed quality assurance (i.e. personnel certification programs) for various professionals in the home performance industry, ranging from building analysts and spray urethane foam applicators to those who install air barrier assemblies or exterior insulation finish systems (EIFS). During this time, he has worked with BPI, Canadian Energy Efficiency Alliance (CEEA), Building Performance Association, and various government stakeholder groups. In presenting him with the award, the jury cited Dalgleish's "accomplishments, dedication, perseverance, generosity, and leadership in the home performance industry throughout Canada and North America."
