Shopping centre expansions awarded

Vancouver's The Rise is a mixed-use project that is part of the city's inner city redevelopment, centred on transit. It combines green space with large-format and smaller retail spaces. The project has also won a 2009 Urban Land Institute (ULI) Award for Excellence.

Two malls, a mixed-use complex, and a customer service space have all been honoured with awards from the International Council of Shopping Centers (ICSC).

The 2009 Canadian Shopping Centre Awards salute the best in marketing, design, and development of retail properties and store design. Eligible for shopping centre owners, developers, management companies, retailers, and architects, the "Design and Development" and "Retail Store Design" categories recognized projects opened between January 1, 2008 and May 31, 2009. Winners included:

• Renovation or expansion of an existing project (37,161 to 69,677 m2 [400,001 to 750,000 sf]): Promenade Shopping Centre (Vaughan, Ont.);
• Renovation or expansion of an existing project (69,678 to 92,903 m2 [750,001 to 1 million sf]): Fairview Mall (Toronto);
• Design and development of a new retail project (13936 to 37161 m2 [150,001 to 400,000 sf]): The Rise (Vancouver, B.C.); and
• Retail store design (465 to 929 m2 [5001 and 10,000 sf]): Southcentre Customer Service Centre In-line Store (Calgary) by Parchoma & Jones Design.

These 2009 Maple Leaf Gold winners are also eligible to win the Global Best-of-the-Best Award, which will be revealed in May at the council's annual convention in Las Vegas, Nev. More information about the Canadian winners (and the teams behind the projects) can be found on the ICSC site.
