CSA celebrates above-standard achievement

Canadian Standards Association (CSA) has bestowed its John Jenkins Award on Carl R. Wilson, P.Eng., for his almost four decades of extensive contributions to wood product and design standards in Canada, China, South Korea, and Taiwan.

Wilson has worked with the Canada Wood Council (CWC) and FPInnovations, and helped lead International Organization for Standardization (ISO) Technical Committee 165 (Timber Structures). His involvement with CSA goes back to the early 1970s, when Wilson began to provide administrative support to the association's Technical Committee on Engineering Design in Wood (CSA 086). He would go on to lead a Canadian team that worked with the United States to form the basis of design values for lumber in North America.

CSA also announced its 2009 Award of Merit recipients, acknowledging those who have contributed to the development of the country's voluntary standards. Honourees related to the built environment include:
• Tom Akerstream (Manitoba Hydro), for supporting development and application of energy efficiency and performance standards;
• the late Ain Allas (Toronto-based Parkin Architects), for leadership, advocacy, and ground-breaking work in healthcare facility standards;
• Gina Cody, P.Eng., M.Eng., PhD, BDS, ACCI, FCCI (Woodbridge, Ont.-based Construction Control Inc.), for involvement in developing standards for the construction industry;
• Stephen W. Douglas (International Association of Electrical Inspectors), for advancement of electrical standards; and
• Per E. Paasche, P.Eng., M.Eng., CCE (University of New Brunswick), for development of standards in healthcare facilities.
