AIBC honours best of the west

West Coast Wonder: The Arts & Social Sciences 1 and Blusson Hall complex at Simon Fraser University was one of two projects to win top honours at the AIBC Architectural Awards.

Sustainability and creativity were honoured at the Architectural Institute of British Columbia's (AIBC's) 2009 Architectural Awards. Eight winners were recognized for architectural excellence in the province:
• Lieutenant-Governor of British Columbia Award in Architecture (Medal)—The Arts & Social Sciences 1 and Blusson Hall complex at Simon Fraser University (Burnaby), by Busby Perkins + Will Architects, and Kensington Park (Burnaby), Robert Burnaby Park (Burnaby), and Swalwell Park Washrooms (Lake Country), by Bruce Carscadden Architect;
• Lieutenant-Governor of British Columbia Award in Architecture (Merit)—Chimo Aquatic and Fitness Centre (Coquitlam), by Hughes Condon Marler: Architects, North Vancouver City Library, by Diamond and Schmitt Architects and CEI Architecture Planning Interiors, and Whistler Public Library, by Hughes Condon Marler: Architects;
• Innovation Award—'22' Series, by Omer Arbel for Bocci;
• Special Jury Award—Dockside Green Synergy (Victoria), by Busby Perkins + Will Architects; and
• Emerging Firm Award—JWT Architecture and Planning.

The annual awards were announced earlier this month at the AIBC conference.

The Chimo Aquatic and Fitness Centre made a splash, winning one of three Lieutenant-Governor of British Columbia Award in Architecture merit awards.
