| Rising profile: Canada honoured for tilt-up concrete projects |

A B.C. and an Ontario project were each recognized at the Tilt-up Concrete Association's (TCA's) 2009 Achievement Awards. In its 18th year, the program honours projects using site-cast tilt-up to introduce new building types and advance technology. Sunset Community Centre, a 2800-m2 (30,000-sf) civic building in Vancouver, won one of the five exclusive Excellence in Achievement awards. Submitted by Fast + Epp Structural Engineers, the multi-use facility features a free-form, curved steel roof resting on 46 uniquely shaped double-wythe tilt-up panels. Toronto's Humber Institute of Technology and Advanced Learning's North Campus Academic and Student Service building was also recognized in the educational category. Submitted by Barry-Bryan Associates, the 7775-m2 (83,694-sf) facility combines tilt-up wall panels with precast concrete floors. Out of more than 100 entries submitted, a total of 44 projects won awards. Entries were judged on esthetic expression, size, schedule, originality, finishes, and special conditions. A cantilevered tilt-up panel above the building's front entrance also adds visual interest.
