Global glory: Canada scores in the architectural arena

Home and the World: Downtown Toronto's Gardiner Museum(above) and the Perimeter Institute for Theoretical Physics on the shore of Silver Lake in Waterloo, Ont.(below), each won an International Architecture Award.

Toronto's Gardiner Museum and Montreal's Pierre Dansereau Science Complex were among the five Canadian winners at the 2008 International Architecture Awards. The program recognizes designs of various new structures, ranging from skyscrapers and corporate buildings to airports and private homes.

Co-presented by the Chicago Athenaeum: Museum of Architecture and Design, Metropolitan Arts Press, and European Centre for Architecture Art Design and Urban Studies, awards were given to 114 winners in September. Canadian recipients for best new global design were:
• Perimeter Institute for Theoretical Physics (Waterloo, Ont.), by Saucier + Perrotte Architectes;
• Gardiner Museum (Toronto), by Kuwabara Payne McKenna Blumberg Architects;
• Four Seasons Centre for the Performing Arts (Toronto), by Diamond and Schmitt Architects;
• Killbear Visitor Centre (Nobel, Ont.), by HOK Architects; and
• Pierre Dansereau Science Complex (Montreal), by SAIA Barbarese Topouzanov Architectes and Tetreault Parent Languedoc and Associates.
