Radon risks and the National Building Code

Health Canada estimates radon in single- and multi-family homes is responsible for 1900 deaths each year in Canada. The Canadian Commission on Building and Fire Codes (CCBFC) has created a task group to review current requirements in Part 5 and Part 9 of the National Building Code of Canada (NBC) for protecting building occupants from radon ingress.

The colourless, naturally occurring, radioactive noble gas is formed from the decay of radium. It affects indoor air quality (IAQ), and is cited as the second most frequent cause of lung cancer, after cigarette smoking.

Proposed changes to NBC are available for public review from September 29 to November 28 of this year.
