Leblanc+Turcotte+Spooner's winning design from the Montréal bus shelter competition will be the prototype for 400 new shelters across the city.

A Montréal firm's design will be used for 400 of the city's new bus shelters.

The team of Tatjana Leblanc, Yolaine Turcotte, and Daniel Spooner (LTS Designers) was chosen as the winner of a competition run by the Design Montréal Office of the Ville de Montréal and Société de transport de Montréal (STM).

Stéphanie Jecrois, project manager for Design Montréal, had high praise for the winning selection.

"The jury was especially impressed with the potential for integration and modular construction afforded by the winning team's proposal," she told Construction Canada Online. "The jury noted this preliminary design offers a comprehensive array of solutions to the complex problems with which the competing designers were presented. The concept incorporates current technologies, and meets STM's comfort and safety requirements."

The design features a self-supporting structure and enables base model manufacturing with the possibility of several units joined together to create variable size configurations that can accommodate larger or smaller numbers of users. It also has a communications column to house various components, including dynamic digital displays and backlit advertising posters, along with an integrated solar power system.

Mayor Gérald Tremblay said the city wants to improve the quality of the urban environment.

"The city made a firm commitment to making such competitions a widespread practice, promoting innovation and excellence in architecture and design," he said. "This project is a concrete illustration of our willingness to ensure that Montréal's designers play a paramount role in shaping our city's future."
